Our History

The Romeo Monday Club was founded in 1879 by a group of Sunday School teachers, making it the first women's club in Romeo and the second oldest women's group in the state of Michigan.

The club was originally called the “Chautauqua Circle,” because several of the founding members had completed a four-year course of adult education classes at the Chautauqua Institute in New York. In 1892, the club changed its name to the Romeo Monday Club to reflect their Monday meetings, but the founding members’ dedication to literary education has remained a core value of the group.

Since 1892, the club has regularly hosted fundraising events in order to provide charitable donations to the community. In 1907, the club began to offer scholarships to Romeo High School graduates planning to pursue a college education in fine arts or performing arts, a tradition they continue over one hundred years later.

In addition to this scholarship program, the club has also made donations to the Romeo District Library, the Romeo Community Schools, Girlstown, Haven Farm, and other local organizations.

Who We Are Today

Today, the Romeo Monday Club continues its legacy of enriching the local community and supporting artistically-talented youth in the Romeo area.

Each year, the club accepts up to 40 members who meet once a month in private homes. At meetings, members enjoy educational programming and hear from a guest speaker who shares expertise on the topic of the month.

Members also organize a few public events each year to raise funds used to endow the Romeo Monday Club Arts Scholarship Award. Each spring, the scholarship is awarded to a Romeo High School student planning to pursue a college education in fine arts or performing arts. Recent fundraising events have included garage sales, croquet tournaments, and historical tours of Romeo.

Members range in age from their 30’s to their 90’s. The club allows women of all generations to build relationships around shared interests and host fun events for the surrounding community.

Local women of all ages are welcome to become members. If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact us at romeomondayclub@gmail.com
